On Feb. 11, Dr. Drew Pinsky will be speaking at Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Auditorium as part of Southeast's "University Speaker Series." "The University Speaker Series," is a student-funded program that started in 2005. It is a program that brings "nationally-touring speakers to Southeast," according to the Southeast Portal.

Pinsky is the second speaker to be featured in the series. The first speaker was Mike Rowe, the host of "Dirty Jobs," who came Jan. 27.

Pinsky is known for his radio show, "Loveline," and his television shows "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," "Sober House" and "Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew." According to Pinsky's website, he is a medical doctor certified in internal and addiction medicine. Pinsky is also the author of several books including "The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America," "Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again" and "When Painkillers Become Dangerous."

Pinsky has been featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," MTV and Fox News Channel. With his appearance as part of the University Speaker Series, he will soon bring his knowledge to the Southeast campus.

"He will be speaking on two main themes: relationships and addictions," Michele Irby, director of Campus Life and Event Services, said. There are four categories that the speakers fit into, Political/Cultural, Diversity/Inclusion, Wellness and Social. Pinsky will be speaking as a guest in the Wellness category.

"[Pinsky] fit in this category for us due to the fact that he will be discussing addiction and ways to deal and cope with it," Irby said.

Pinsky was picked from a large number of potential speakers by a group of voters that represented several campus organizations. Drew's name was included in a list of tentative participants for the "University Speaker Series." After placing him into the "Wellness" category, an online poll was conducted via the Southeast Portal to determine which of the top five proposed speakers would appear at Academic Hall.

"[Pinsky] received a great deal of interest through the portal poll," Irby said.

This is evidently someone students truly wanted to come and speak on campus. "I can't wait to see Dr. Drew," Southeast junior, Laura Thurman said. "I've seen him on MTV and on 'Teen Mom,' and seeing him in person is going to be really exciting."

Dr. Drew Pinsky will speak at Southeast's Academic Hall as part of the "University Speaker Series," on Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
