Redhawks get first conference win of 2009

The Southeast Missouri State football team avoided having a winless conference record with a 49-13 thrashing of rival Murray State.
Murray State had a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Redhawks came roaring back with 21 unanswered points, and later 22 unanswered points.
The Redhawks outgained the Racers by 200 yards, just seven yards shy of reaching 500 total yards of offense for the game. The ground game was the focal point of the Redhawk attack as the Redhawks rushed for 302 yards as a team. By contrast, Murray State only 88 rushing yards.
Both Mike Jones and Henry Harris broke 100 rushing yards and had two touchdowns each. Jones averaged a staggering 8.1 yards per carry. Quarterback Matt Scheible had 54 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Scheible only completed half of his passes (6 out of 12) but threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns. His longest pass was a 75-yarder to Chantae Ahamefule early in the second quarter that started the string of 21 straight Redhawk points.
The Redhawk defense was very stout, holding Murray State to just 293 total yards of offense. The Redhawks compiled five sacks; two each by Marvin Anderson and Josh Gipson and one by Justin Love. The Redhawks also forced two fumbles and recovered one.
The Redhawks now turn their attention to the Southern Illinois Salukis in the season finale. The game figures to be a tough one. The Salukis are riding a nine-game winning streak, their last loss being the season opener against Marshall. The Redhawks have lost three in a to the Salukis; 58-23 was the final score of their last meeting in 2005.
The kickoff for the game in scheduled for 1 p.m. this Saturday at Houck Stadium. The game is also Senior Day.
