The Redhawks ended their cross country season on Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Springfield, Mo. The men's team compiled 607 points, which earned them a 22nd place finish. The women's team only sent two runners to compete, so they did not have enough competitors to earn a team score.
The men ran a 10K course for the regional meet, which is 2K longer than their typical race. Chris Loseman was the first Redhawk to cross the finish line. Loseman took 104th place with a time of 34:03.40. For the second race in a row, freshman Tyler Mullen was the second Redhawk finisher; he took 115th place with a time of 34:26.60. Jason Lumpkin (125th-34:44.80), Cody Martin (140th-35:16.60) and Brandon Funderburk (153rd-35:51.00) rounded out the Redhawk's team.
Loseman said that the team definitely did not run as well as they could have in the regional meet, but he did think positively on the season as a whole. "Considering all of the injuries we had," Loseman said, "I think that we had a very productive season. We are really looking forward to next year when we will get three of our guys back."
The women also had to run a longer course than they usually do: a 6K instead of a 5K. Monica Noble finished the course in 23:35.60 which earned her 109th place, and she was closely followed by Szandra Pal. Pal finished the course in 23:56.30 which earned her 124th place.
Hassan Mead of Minnesota was the first overall finisher in the men's race with a time of 30:31.90, but it was Oklahoma State University that won the team competition. On the women's side, Angela Bizzarri of Illinois took first with a time of 20:07.50, and Minnesota was the top team finisher.
The top two teams from both the men's and women's races will go on to compete in the NCAA National Championship on Monday Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
