Each semester the Southeast Guitar Ensemble put on a performance and Southeast students looking to see one this fall need only to wait until Dec. 7. The Guitar Ensemble will hold a concert that Monday. The performance is taking place in Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.
The ensemble is set to perform a concerto composed by Georg Phillip and selections from "Estampes" by Federico Moreno Torroba. The concert will also feature the guitar majors of Southeast performing solos and chamber music. Guitar majors will be performing pieces by Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Leo Brouwer and many others.
In the past, concerts have featured other instruments as well like the flute, piano, and voice. This semester's performance is no different.
Patrick Rafferty heads Southeast's Guitar Ensemble and says that everyone is looking forward to the performance on Dec. 7. "There will be full ensemble works, a guitar duo, several flute and guitar works and also some solos," said Rafferty. The ensemble has been working hard this semester and Rafferty said the hard work the ensemble has been doing is paying off. "The ensemble has improved noticeably this semester," said Rafferty. Rafferty observed that a lot of the work this semester has gone into improving "group sound."
The ensemble selections to be performed Dec. 7 are difficult. "Both ensemble pieces require the utmost focus and control," said Rafferty. "What we have found is that "less is more" and that the ability to listen is of primary importance, especially in Baroque music like the Telemann."
The Guitar Ensemble is an audition group open to all students. The group performs each semester and offers practice and experience to all involved. Guitar majors in the ensemble learn to perform standard chamber music and other programs are offered.
This year's ensemble includes Jon Poston, Cody Tucker, Whit Wilson, Justin Kinzinger and Conrad Higgerson.
