The much anticipated release date for Modern Warfare 2, the sixth release in the Call of Duty franchise, has come and this fan boy couldn't be happier. The game developers' haven't try to reinvent the wheel here, they stayed true to the first-person-shooter game engine from Call of Duty 4.
The story mode picks up where the games predecessor left off, the Russian Ultranationalists are stirring up trouble again. Zakhaev, from COD4, has been neutralized and his lieutenant Makarov has taken his place as leader of the terrorist organization. Its up to Task Force 141, a group of international commandos under the command of "Soap" MacTavish another throwback to COD4, to save the day. You play "Roach" Sanders, a new addition to the special unit.
The graphics are stunning, and I would go as far as saying this is the best looking game on the PS3. The environments are detailed and diverse, my personal favorite is the snowy mountains of Kazakhstan. The blood splatter and body damage from gunshot and explosive damage is a huge upgrade from in the game's forerunners.
A seasoned gamer will have no problem polishing off the story mode in a little under eight hours. One downside is that the story mode might not hold much replay value but the real gem of this game is the online multiplayer mode.
There is simply nothing more fun than taking trash while "fragging" other online players. The online mode still uses the perk system of gaining experience points from stringing together kills and completing challenges to upgrade weapons and abilities. There are 14 online modes ranging from free for all to capture the flag. Kill streaks, multiple kills without dying, allow online players to call death from the sky in form of predator missile strikes and helicopter gun ships. Never fear newbies, the creators of this game have taken mercy on you in the form of death steak perks. If a newbie is getting killed over and over without killing anyone they are permitted to steal upgraded weapons from their tormentors along with other helping perks.
Oh, that's not all. If you're still hungry for more Modern Warfare the game comes with special ops missions. There are 23 missions total, separate for the story mode, that can be played in split screen and single player. This new feature adds depth to a game already well worth the $59 price tag.
Mark my words, when it comes down to selecting "game of the year" COD Modern Warfare 2 will be a heavy weight contender. I recommend this first person shooter to anyone, who like me, has the maps from the first Modern Warfare memorized and gaming new comers alike. Hope to see you online, in my crosshairs.
