Student Government passes resolutions and discusses Wi-Fi options on campus
Student Government senators discussed the possibility of more wireless hotspots in all the buildings on campus and passed two new resolutions on Monday.
Student Issues Chair Bryan Kujawa asked the senators how they felt about the issue of wireless connections on campus. "The issue is still being discussed with the IT department and more information will be known in a couple of weeks," Kujawa said.
For now the Technology Department wants to know if an all-over campus wireless system is better than a more targeted approach. The all-over wireless on campus will cost about $300,00-500,000 to install while the more targeted approach would be cheaper. Plans for the targeted approach are to let areas send a request in to the IT department who would then review the request and check out the location to see if it would be an ideal spot for wireless. The question is then would having all of these requests slow down the process of getting wireless to these areas.
Rules Committee Chair Shamone Mitchell said, "I think that there should be wireless in every lounge on campus."
Student Government is taking the issue to their survey program on portal where students can weigh-in with their opinions.
Two resolutions passed unanimously at the meeting. The first one recognizes Students in Action and Sigma Chi as student organizations for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Students in Action is a group that offers alternate spring break trips such as doing volunteer work like Habitat for Humanity in other states. The other resolution recognizes a brand new student organization called Diversity Coalition.
