If you missed your chance to experience the live music of the Southeast Jazz Bands last Thursday, no need to worry, the "Sultans of Swing" will be performing at Buckner's Brewing Company Nov. 19.
As a part of the Fall 2009 Athenaeum Series, the Southeast Brass Quintet consists of five faculty members of the Music department: Marc Fulgham, Barry Bernhardt, Robert Conger, Jessie Reuter, and Charles Kelley.
The Brass Quintet is one of the many ensembles in Southeast, three of which performed in the Jazz series concert.
The Jazz Studio ensemble, Jazz Lab band, and the "Sultans of Swing", another ensemble of faculty members, displayed the talent of not only the students but the faculty as well. Conger said having the faculty perform is beneficial to the students in the Music department.
The Studio Jazz Ensemble directed by Conger is an "extraordinarily gifted collection of students performs a wide array of contemporary and standard big-band literature in a variety of styles," according to the Music department's webpage. Students in the ensemble are challenged to grow as musicians having several on and off campus performances.
Not only does Conger instruct the students, but he also respects their input when rehearsing the pieces, allowing and encouraging the students to express their creativity.
The Jazz Lab Band also plays a variety of jazz compositions.
Jazz Lab is open to all students who wish to develop better skills in big- band jazz and improvisation.
The Jazz Lab band performs often with the studio jazz ensemble in concert. Southeast Jazz Bands will be featuring at Buckner's Brewing Company on Friday Dec. 4.
Southeast Missouri State University's Brass quintet performed live brass chamber music on Nov. 4, in Kent Library.
