Southeast Continuing Education will be sponsoring a Haunted Downtown Walking Tour this Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30. Tours will start at 7:15 p.m. and end around midnight. Each tour will last about an hour. The groups will basically make a big circle around the downtown area going as far south as the Glenn House, which is just past the River Campus.

The tour will go through several historic sites, including visits to Old Lorimer Cemetary, which is replete with ghosts, according to local legends.

According to the website, "Cape Girardeau's historic downtown is full of 'true' tales of ghosts and memorable characters as well as landmark buildings." The tour will take its guest throughout the downtown area, explaining some of these spooky stories and interesting facts.

Christy Mershon, assistant director of extended and continuing education said it is something fun to do that is spooky for Halloween. She also said the tour is not limited to just ghost stories; there are also some more interesting and fun things down town.

"The hard part will be narrowing it all down to fit it into the hour," Mershon said.

Mershon gave several examples of what kind of stories the tour will go through including the ghosts of the river, which included one of the largest marine water accidents that changed the marine waterway laws, and the use of the first pneumatics system in the upstairs of Buckner's.

The tour is designed more for adults ages 18 and above.

"The stories are pretty sensationalistic," Mershon said. "They aren't necessarily child friendly."

This event is replacing Ghost Hunting 101 that Southeast Continuing Education has put on in years past. They are putting the paranormal investigations on hold to focus more on the historic aspect.

"I can envision us doing it again, but this is the first time we've tried it," Mershon said.

The tour costs 20 dollars per person or 30 dollars per couple. However, Southeast affiliates get a discount of 5 dollars if they identify themselves as such when they register. Tickets are available at 573-986-6879.

Mershon is expecting a good crowd to come out for the event. In fact there have been approximately 80 people who have already signed up for the event. Each group can only consist of 16 people, so sign up soon Southeast.
