Tom Cushman, one of the most respected sports writers in the field, will be coming to Southeast to give a lecture and sign books.
The event will occur at Glenn Auditorium in Dempster Hall Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and should be the highlight of any sports fanatic's dreams-especially boxing fans.
According to Susan Swartwout, the publisher and editor of the Southeast Missouri State University Press: "He has this wonderful way of explaining and illuminating things, his work with imagery is terrific, and he finds the most interesting parts of the story and doesn't back down from them." She said that Cushman, while in Philadelphia, wrote an article that stood against the local mob getting their hands on a boxing license after a thug in the group was known to be applying for one.
His reign as one of the best sports writers around doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. The upcoming event at Glenn Auditorium is focused around his soon to be published book, titled "Muhammad Ali and the Greatest Heavyweight Generation," has been garnering lots of advance praise.
According to the University Press, famed sports analyst Jim Lampley, most known for his participation in the "HBO World Championship Boxing" series, said of the book, "Tom Cushman's stirring remembrance of that time and those personalities is a great read for those who saw it and those who can only wish they had."
Also according to Swartwout, "[The book is] endorsed on the back lovingly by George Foreman, Bobby Knight…and Ed Schulyer; who are all very famous sports names who wouldn't have put their names on a book that they didn't like."
Swartwout also said that book has some very exclusive and never-before-published photos from the Ali era. "Some have come from the private collections of Cushman, J. Russell Peltz, one of the biggest boxing promoters ever…and also George Foreman's long-time manager Bill Caplan."
According to the University Press, in addition to writing on boxing, Cushman has also reported on "10 Olympic Games, 25 World Series, 26 Super Bowls, 30 NCAA Final Fours, 21 Masters Golf Tournaments, [and] 18 U.S. Open Golf Tournaments…"
According to Swartwout, Cushman is looking forward to coming to Cape Girardeau, as he attended Cape Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University.
To get a copy of this book, Swartwout said "It is available in the Southeast Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, and then online at [the University Press] website or from Amazon.com."
