Southeast baseball team takes two in Austin Peay series and moves into first

It was a long day at the ballpark on April 25, when the Redhawks battled Austin Peay. The doubleheader lasted seven hours and was a long, competitive struggle. The Redhawks, however, took the game on April 26 with ease.
The opener lasted four hours and 12 minutes, but it was as competitive as it was long. The Redhawks' offense came out strong in the third inning, scoring seven runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homerun by senior right-fielder Tyrell Cummings and a three-run home run by sophomore designated hitter Louie Haseltine.
The score was 11-2 going into the seventh inning, when junior pitcher Kyle Gumieny began to tire out. The Governors posted five runs in the eighth and retired Gumieny. They scored another two runs in the eighth, making it 11-9. Southeast got the insurance run they needed in the bottom of the eighth, to secure the win. Southeast junior pitcher John Salazar managed to hold the Governors. With the bases loaded, Salazar struck out Matt Kole, Austin Peay's homerun leader.With a final score of 12-9, Salazar was credited with the second save of his career.
The Redhawks weren't able to hold onto an early five-run lead during the nightcap. The early lead was highlighted by a three-run homerun from junior catcher Jim Klocke. The Governors were able to retire junior pitcher Todd Strahlendorf in the fifth inning after scoring six runs, which gave them the lead for the rest of the game. Southeast would not score in the final five innings of the game.The final score was 9-5, and Strahlendorf was credited with the loss.
"We scored a lot of runs, but so did they," said head coach Mark Hogan. "Their bats got hot, and that was the difference."
Sunday's game was highlighted by excellent pitching from Southeast ace senior left-hander James Leigh. The Redhawks complemented their pitching with a strong offense. The Redhawks had 15 hits in the game and scored 13 runs.
"James was tremendous. He threw eight great innings," said Hogan. "We hit the ball well again, and it was a big win for us, to win the series."
Leigh pitched nine innings and was relieved by Klocke in the ninth inning. Southeast's offense was on fire with strong hits by Haseltine and Cummings. Haseltine went 3-for-6 with a homerun, two doubles and five RBIs. Cummings went 4-for-5 with four RBIs.
Klocke and senior left-fielder Justin Wheeler had two hits each. The final score of the game was 13-3. Leigh was credited with the win.
"We had good pitching in the first and third games, and we hit well in all three games," Hogan said of the series.
The series advanced the Redhawks to first place in the OVC.
