Southeast Missouri State University will hold its spring commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2009 on Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m., in the Show Me Center.
Julie Grueneberg, assistant registrar to graduation, said that as of April 24, the preliminary number of graduating students was 900 undergraduates and 129 graduates.
"Graduation numbers are still fluctuating because we still have some students finishing some things up," Grueneberg said.
A reception for the graduates in the Student Recreation Center-North will immediately follow commencement. "Basically, this is a opportunity for students to meet with families, take pictures, talk with faculty, and those types of things," Grueneberg said.
Honors Convocation is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Show Me Center, to recognize students who have maintained outstanding grade-point averages. The required undergraduate grade-point average for graduating cum laude is 3.5 to 3.74, magna cum laude is 3.75 to 3.89, and summa cum laude is 3.9 to 4.0.
Among the undergraduates participating in the Honors Convocation, which Grueneberg said is also subject to change, 52 will graduate summa cum laude, 64 will graduate magna cum laude, and 133 will graduate cum laude.
The students will have their name, hometown, degree and major announced at the special event.
In addition to the graduates, seven Southeast alumni will be honored with the 2009 Young Alumni Merit Award during commencement exercises. The award is given annually to honor those alumni under the age of 37 who have brought distinction to the university through professional growth, service and individual character. Nominations may come from faculty, staff or alumni, and the Alumni Association chooses from the list of nominees representing each college and selects the recipients.
The recipients and the college presenting each award are as follows:
• Jeanne Whitley '98, of St. Louis, Mo., senior program manager with Maritz, Inc., Harrison College of Business
