Southeast President Kenneth W. Dobbins accepted the retirement request from Provost Jane Stephens on April 28. Dr. Stephens was named provost in May 2000, returning to Southeast after serving on the university staff for 16 years, from 1978 to 1994. A Provost Search Committee will be created with the hopes of finding a new Provost to be on campus effective Jan. 4, 2010.

"She's been an integral part of the university," said Student Government President Sarah Snyder. "Dr. Stephens has always been very willing to meet with Student Government. We will definitely miss her."

Some of the events that Stephens oversaw was the opening of the River Campus, establishing and expanding a web-based curriculum, implementing fellowships for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, establishing the Regional Campuses at Sikeston and Kennett and the Higher Education Center in Perryville, creating the Student Transitions Program and implementing a post-professorial merit review process.

According to the news release announcing her retirement, the Faculty Senate Chairperson will be holding elections for a Provost Search Committee as soon as possible so that the committee will be finalized during the last week of this semester.

Correction: In the April 28, 2009 issue of The Arrow, it was incorrectly published that Southeast Provost Jane Stephens had officially retired on April 27, 2009. Instead, it was April 27 that Southeast President Kenneth W. Dobbins accepted the retirement request from Stephens. Stephens will not be retiring this semester and university officials are hoping to have a new Provost on campus effective Jan. 4, 2010. The Arrow regrets this error.
