The Horizons Summer Youth Program at Southeast Missouri State University is geared toward teaching kids things they wouldn't learn in a typical school setting. The office of extended and continuing education hosts the program.

The program schedules numerous events throughout the month of June, from "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" to "Junior Veterinarian."

According to Christina Mershon, assistant director of extended and continuing education, the program was first started as a "summer enrichment opportunity for academically astute children." Now in its 23rd year, the program has gradually grown to include any child from nine to 14 years of age, and there are also a couple of classes scheduled for the "Little Horizons," which include children five to eight years of age.

"The idea is that these classes are fun but also educational," Mershon said.

According to the program's press release, the Horizons program includes four sessions: June 1-5, June 8-12, June 15-19 and June 22-26. Also, the program includes a morning session from 9 to noon, an afternoon session from 1 to 4, and some of the courses run the entire length of the day.

"Using this schedule, we are able to offer 29 separate courses within a thirty day period," Mershon said.

Of the 29, there are courses geared toward careers such as a veterinary medicine, meteorology, journalism and aeronautics. To highlight a few of these courses, there is "Let's Make a Movie," "Spacey Science with NASA: An Astro Adventure," "Do You Kung Fu? Martial Arts for Kids," and "Junior Engineer." These are only a select few of the numerous courses designed especially for kids.

Mershon said the most of the courses take place on the campus of Southeast Missouri State, besides the select courses that include field trips.

According the Mershon, the "From Crime Scene to Corrections" class visits the county courthouse and the county jail, and the "Super Kids: Going Green" course will work at the Cape Organic Garden and visit the recycling center.
