Southeast Missouri State University's Student Government and the College of Business are gearing up for this spring's Southeast Apprentice program. Program applicants are getting ready for a chance to earn knowledge and money.

The Southeast Apprentice program gives students an opportunity to learn more about starting and operating a small business. Students will learn how to do market research, manage cash flow and create a business plan.

At the end of the program, participants can submit their business plans for a chance to win grant money for starting the business. Winners are also eligible for six months of rent-free office space in the business incubator at the Innovation Center.

Stefanie Tooley, one of last year's winners, used her $5,000 grant to purchase a computer and other equipment to start her graphic design business.

The for-credit class will begin Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 and will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons throughout the spring semester.

The program is open to any Southeast students, not just business majors. Those wishing to apply need to submit an application and a business concept paper by Tuesday, Nov. 20. A committee will select up to 10 of those students for entrance into the program.

Dennis Roedemeir, executive director of the Missouri Research Corporation at the Innovation Center, said that the Southeast Apprentice program is a great opportunity for students. It can give them a jump-start in a business of their own and insight from others who have experience in small business ownership.

"We love to share with these young students in getting them ready because we've actually been there and gone through that," Roedemeier said.

Roedemeier started his business while still a junior in college. The fruits of his labor can now be found nearly everywhere in the state. He designed the white and yellow striping paint seen on Missouri's roadways.

"I wish they would have had something like this when I was in college," Rodemeier said. "If they did, I would have been the first one to sign up."

Applications and details can be found online at www.semo.edu/innovation/training_11943.htm. They can also be picked up at the Innovation Center located at 920 Broadway or from Student Government. They will need to be turned in to the Student Government Office on the third floor of the University Center.
