Evolve or be doomed to pop -culture obscurity. It's almost understood in the world of rock criticism. You can get by with simplicity and a basic formula for a couple albums, but at some point, there's gonna be backlash. It's not necessarily about originality, but we critics pride ourselves on being able to tell when someone's not trying.
