Students from any culture or religion are invited to the Juma prayer today at 1 p.m. in the Cultural Center. The prayer is an Islamic tradition and takes place every Friday. "Muslims pray five times a day, everyday, but on Friday's our afternoon prayer is replaced with a centralized prayer," said Shaukat Sheikh, a second year graduate student for communication studies and technology.

A University of Memphis graduate student and teacher at Southwind Elementary School will showcase his culinary skills on an upcoming episode of TLC's "BBQ Pitmasters."

Education administration student Tyler Salyer and his team, the Big Mouth Smokers, competed against teams from across the country for $100,000 on the cooking show, shot in July.

He was struck by a train in Lombard, Ill., the Dupage County Coroner's office said.

According to the Chicago Breaking News Center website, a Union Pacific freight train struck a pedestrian at about 2 a.

For the first time in history, student loan debt now exceeds credit card debt, according to a June report on the student financial aid site FastWeb.com.

Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org and FastWeb, reported that as of June, students owe more than $830 billion in student loans, with $665 billion making up federal education loans and an estimated $168 billion coming from private loans.

Suicide suspected for student's death

Early Wednesday morning a westbound freight train struck Eastern student Ryan Mazgay in Lombard, Ill. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Mazgay, 20, was on foot and the preliminary account is that he took his own life, said Dane Cuny, the deputy sheriff of the Lombard Police Department.
