Life is hard, especially for the routine college student, but for high school student R.J. Berger, life is a mere impossibility.

This past summer, MTV premiered a show titled "The Hard Times of R.J. Berger" which took ordinary high school student R.J. and his friends Miles and Lily, dream girl Jenny Swanson and jock rival Max Owens and placed them in awkward, yet common high school situations.

If you're reading a paper copy of this column, I'm assuming you've already checked the most read and arguably the most entertaining section of the newspaper. I'd like to say it's news, arts and entertainment or even this opinion section, but truth be told, it's the police blotter.

When I spoke with my friend Tyler Barrick recently about the overturning of Proposition 8, the strong emotions he held a month earlier were still present. Barrick originally told me he was excited and then saddened by what has occurred this past month in California.

"Jesus this, Moses that, Abraham hit me with a wiffle ball bat."

Column: New view of life after loss of appendage

This fall is different than all the others because this fall I am coming back to Charleston as an amputee.

I became an amputee by slamming the middle finger on my left hand in the back door of my house.

The heat of the summer had made the door expand beyond its frame so I was unable to shut it from the outside.

With the Rod Blagojevich trial over, and only one guilty charge out of the 24 counts against him, the whirlwind of unnecessary publicity outings have begun - and these are outings he doesn't need or deserve.

Blagojevich appeared at Chicago's Comic Con signing autographs for $50 each, according to an article from the Washington Times.
